Raku firing, originating in Japan involves the rapid firing in a gas-fired kiln to a temperature of approximately 900 degrees Celsius. At this point the pot is removed from the kiln and covered in saw dust. The heat of the pot causes the sawdust to combust; by covering the pot to reduce availablity of oxygen, smoke is generated and the metal oxides in the glaze, show their metallic features.
