Gilly Mound

My original pieces are painted in acrylic on stretched canvas. I have a textile background so occasionally stitch or collage will find it's way into my work. My inspiration comes from many everyday themes: ceramics, houses, boats, birds, fish, the countryside where I live and the coast. I love to paint still life and often the objects in my paintings and prints are pieces I own, but sometimes they are drawn from my imagination. The background landscapes and seascapes may be real or imagined but the pictures are about the shapes, colours and textures of the themes I study. Through these I hope to convey a sense of serenity and tranquility via an ordinary scene - to show the essence and beauty of a place or subject as it appears to me.

I studied Fashion & Textiles at UWE Bristol, graduating in 1995. Previously to this I worked as a fabric retailer and knitwear designer, selling my designs in the UK, Europe and Australia and designing a spring knitwear collection for Mulberry. After graduating I taught fashion and textiles part-time for several years whilst developing my own art practice. I am still a great lover of textiles, but increasingly over the years painting has become my passion.

My home and studio overlook the beautiful Teme Valley in Worcestershire, which I share with my husband John, our young Airedale George and a few happy chickens!
